Order book heatmap

The order book drawn behind your candles: where buy and sell orders wait at each price, how to turn the heatmap on, its settings, and the Magnifier.

The order book heatmap draws the order book behind your candles: the buy and sell orders waiting at each price, over time. The bigger the orders at a price, the stronger its color, so large resting orders show as bright bands. Watch what happens when price reaches a band: the orders absorb it, get filled, or get pulled before price arrives.

Turn it on

  1. Click Heatmap, the flame icon in the top bar. The heatmap panel opens.
  2. Flip the switch in the panel header to ON. The heatmap draws behind the candles on the active chart, and a dot on the button shows that it is on.

To turn it off, flip the same switch to OFF. Undo in the footer brings it back.

Other ways to reach it:

  • Press Alt+Shift+H (Option+Shift+H on macOS) to open the heatmap panel.
  • Open Indicators in the top bar and search for Order Book Heatmap.
  • Open super search with Ctrl/Cmd+K and type "heatmap": each heatmap row turns that heatmap on or off.
  • If the Heatmap button is not in your top bar, open the Panels menu and pick Heatmap.

A chart holds one heatmap at a time. The heatmap needs a signed-in account with a verified email, and it uses one indicator slot. On OpenMarket Plus the heatmap loads the full order book; the free plan loads a reduced book, so large orders far from price can drop off the map (Plans and limits).

Settings in the heatmap panel

With the heatmap on, the panel holds its settings. Hover a setting's name to see what it does.

  • Source: which heatmap draws. Single, the default, is this exchange's order book. Aggregate adds several exchanges' books: pick them with the exchange chips, at least one. HL Liquidation and HL TP/SL map where Hyperliquid traders would be liquidated or have take-profit and stop-loss orders. Options (GEX) draws the GEX heatmap instead, whose settings live in its own indicator settings.
  • Denomination: measures the waiting orders in coins (COIN, the default) or in US dollars (USD).
  • Resolution: HD, the default, groups nearby prices into bigger rows. 4K draws finer rows for more detail.
  • Appearance: Single tone uses one color ramp for the whole book. Two tone switches color at the last traded price: one color for the buy orders below it, another for the sell orders above.
  • Sensitivity: which order sizes get color. Orders smaller than the left handle draw nothing, and orders at the right handle or bigger draw at full color. High, Med and Low move the handles for you, and Reset returns to the default.
  • Intensity: the sensitivity bar as numbers you can type. Threshold and Ceiling are the left and right handles, and Min Bounds and Max Bounds are the two ends of the bar.
  • Display: Heatmap, the default, draws the waiting orders over time. Profile draws only the latest book, as bars at the price scale. Both draws the two. Cross-section adds a pane with the latest book laid out across prices.
  • Style: Volumetric, the default, draws beads that grow with the amount, so big orders stand out. Classic fills even tiles that only get brighter.
  • View Options: Values prints each cell's amount on the heatmap when it has room (off by default). Magnifier shows a zoomed card of the orders under your pointer (on by default).

The Magnifier

The Magnifier is the zoomed card that follows your pointer over the heatmap and shows the orders under it. It is on by default, and the setting belongs to each chart's heatmap.

To hide it or show it again:

  • In the heatmap panel, click Magnifier under View Options.
  • Press Alt+M (Option+M on macOS), the Heatmap magnifier shortcut. You can change it in Keyboard Shortcuts (how).
  • In super search (Ctrl/Cmd+K), type "magnifier".

The Magnifier and the Floating Tooltip setting turn each other off: switching one on hides the other. The shortcut works only on a chart with a heatmap, and not on grids larger than the standard layouts and presets (the standard layouts go up to 2x2, or three charts in a row or column); the Magnifier button in the panel still works there.

A zoom that appears while you hold Shift over a footprint or a TPO is a different feature, the Hover Lens. Turn it off from super search: type "hover lens".

Which markets have it

  • Crypto: every exchange whose order book OpenMarket carries for the coin. Aggregate and the Hyperliquid sources are crypto only.
  • CME futures: the exchange's own book, counted in contracts, in HD. Without real-time depth the heatmap runs on delayed data and says so (What do the CME data plans include?).
  • Prediction markets: the market's book, counted in shares.
  • US stocks have no order book heatmap; their options heatmap is the GEX heatmap.

The heatmap cannot show in the % comparison scale mode or in transformation mode. When a market has no heatmap data, the Heatmap button dims and tells you why.
