Each market keeps its own trading day, and the daily candle runs from one open to the next.
| Market | Trading day | Daily candle |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto | 00:00 to 00:00 UTC | One per calendar day, seven days a week |
| Forex and gold (FX_OTC) | 17:00 to 17:00 New York | Sunday evening trading belongs to Monday's candle, so a week has five daily candles and no Sunday candle |
| CME futures | 17:00 to 17:00 Chicago | Sunday evening belongs to Monday's candle |
| US stocks | The New York trading day | One per trading day |
- Weekly and 4-hour candles follow the same day. On forex and gold the weekly candle opens Sunday 17:00 New York, and 4-hour candles start at 17:00, 21:00, 01:00 New York and so on. CME futures do the same on Chicago time.
- New York follows daylight saving. In summer 17:00 New York is 21:00 UTC; in winter it is 22:00 UTC. The candle stays on 17:00 New York either way.
- Indicators and scripts read the same day. The previous day's high and low, a session VWAP and the day's open on a forex or gold chart use the 17:00 New York day, so they sit on the daily candle's wicks. Your own scripts get the same day from
time.trade_date.
This is the 17:00 New York close that TradingView and MT4 brokers use for forex and gold. Hiding weekends on markets that close is a separate setting: see Why are weekend candles missing from my chart?
